A very good company
Observation, first drafted on Jan. 11, published on Jan. 16, 2008
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Noah denkt™ has been accused at times of preferring to criticise organizations rather than to praise them. And
since we do not want this accusation to stand we have decided to write today about what might well be the best
company in the world. And to confound our critics completely, we would like to tell them now that our highest
award for entrepreneurship goes to, - yes, “Le Canard Enchaîné” of France.

To understand why we have come to this conclusion, we invite the public to visit the official website of this
fabulous newspaper. For here, the inclined reader will be able to learn, that it has not been a lack of demand, or a
resistance on the part of its client base which have led “Le Canard” to forego the option of a fully fledged website,
but that it, much rather, has been its own critical obstinacy that has prevented it from really entering the world
wide net. For too much does it treasure its role “of informing and distracting readers by paperwork only” that it
would now still want to dilute this beautiful challenge by accepting another, second one.
(“…notre métier, c'est
d'informer et de distraire nos lecteurs, avec du papier journal et de l'encre. C'est un beau métier qui suffit à
occuper notre équipe.”)

Now, certainly it does not require further explanation, why we have decided to nominate "Le Canard" for the best
newspaper award. But given the fact, that nothing in this world can be taken for granted still, we have convinced
ourselves to somewhat expand on our motion, if only not leave the slightest doubt about its reasonableness.

Well, then, what impresses Noah denkt™ most in “Le Canard” is the easiness with which it defies conventional
wisdom and is successful because of that. After all, this is not the first time that this newspaper has abstained from
following a general folly, but much rather is its Internet stance one of many examples where “Le Canard” has
managed to keep itself unaffected by the sheer might of an overwhelming fashion trend. (So, for instance, has it
neither felt compelled to change its design over the years, as everyone else has, nor has it subscribed to the idea
that you need to invite advertisers in order to be commercially viable.) It should therefore not come as a surprise
to anyone that of all newspapers it has been this one that has succeeded in surviving so far without major internal
and external upheavals.

Given therefore that “Le Canard” is in deed one of a kind, we ask the public to support our call, for naming this
the best company that there is. For too valuable is its independence stance, that we should now still want to
minimize that by not granting it its well deserved credit.

No if we want to be honest here, we have to say, that the current crisis of print media is also of its own making.
And so we should praise “Le Canard” for proving that the opposite is possible. For too devastating would reality
be otherwise, that we should now still want to confront it here.

Addition to this comment, inserted on Feb. 15, 2010: Meanwhile, Noah denkt™ has learned that the French author Michel
Houellebecq is of the opinion that “Le canard enchaîné” has a tendency to lie, at least in its cultural section. (See Houellebecq’s and
HB Levy’s book “Public Enemies”)If that is true, and it may well be so, since we regard Mr. Houellebecq as trustworthy then we would
surely have to revisit our overall judgment of “Le canard enchaîné”.
