“Quite frankly!”
Observation from someone, who is not in his pyjama, on Katie Couric’s appearance on the Kalb
Report, published on Oct. 2, 2007
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please do not get us wrong. We like Katie Couric. We want her to continue anchoring the CBS news. And we
even, in many respects, share the journalistic philosophy that she has detailed last week in her interview on the
Kalb Report (Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007). The question, however, that her appearance there poses for us, is,
whether she is not wee bit too timid, when defining the editorializing duty that a prime-time moderator has. For too
much does it appear to us, as if she raising the bar of evidence too high, before taking an outright and
unambiguous stance, that we could now still say, that she is living up to highest responsibilities that her position
entails.
No, if we want to be honest here, we have to admit, that she is just a little to soothing for us, to be able to endorse
her altogether. And so we hope to encourage her, to more often go beyond the unifying stance that she prefers
to take. For too important is it, to occasionally rock the boat, to preserve that very unity, that one could now still
hope to achieve the same by avoiding doing that.
No, no, if we do not want to lie to ourselves, we have to accept, that reason cannot be anchored without
occasionally challenging the established notion of it. And so we ask Ms. Couric not to refrain from freely speaking
her mind. For too important is it, that she, at times, dons her own pyjama too, that we could now still hope to get
her there, by not reclaiming it.
Given therefore that especially the resolution of big issues requires courageous confidence, we hope that these
words will help Katie to go beyond the all-American dream that she presents. For too much does even the US
depend on intellectual bravery that one could generate that now by delegating the responsibility for it to others.
