Noah denkt™’s Democracy and Free Market Index
Opinion, first drafted on July 10, published on July 12, 2009
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How do selected countries compare in doing justice to the spirit of democracy and freedom? The following table
tries to illustrate that a true democracy requires more than just holding fee elections. After all, freedom can only
work if it is supported by an enlightened public and a leadership that has a true appreciation and respect for the
independence and emancipation of its average citizens.

Obviously the evaluations given below
(scale between "0" (very bad) and "10" (very good)) are of an entirely subjective
nature which, at times, has to rely even on second-hand anecdotal evidence in order to complete the task that it
has set for itself. So, if readers feel that this or that country has been treated unfairly, they are invited to publish
their own guesstimates.
