“Yes” to a constitutional monarchy
A dialog with the Alter Ego on Prince William's and Kate Middleton's Wedding,
drafted an posted on April 29, 2011
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Question by Alter Ego of Noah denkt™ (AE): Noah denkt™ firmly supports the concept of equality and
democracy, correct?
Answer by Noah denkt™ (Nd): Correct!
AE: What then do you make of the spectacle of the royal wedding in Britain today? Do you think that this makes
any sense?
Nd: Yes, we do.
AE: Why?
Nd: Because the idea of a constitutional monarchy is to provide a living reference and a real-time inspiration for
good manners, countenance, style, historical awareness and staying power. In that, it helps its citizens to brush
up both their own attitude towards life as well as their personal behavior towards others.
AE: And you think that these rather abstract values justify the enormous expenses that go with a royal family?
Nd: We believe so.
AE: Well, we aren’t so sure about that. After all, there is ample evidence which would contradict your earlier
theory according to which the example of a monarchy has an educational value for its citizens. Just think about
the many scandals that have blemished the image of the royal family in Britain. And do not forget that there are a
good number of British hooligans who do not seem to find much inspiration in the fabulous manners that they are
supposed to discover while watching their royal family. Doesn’t all this suggest that there is something
fundamentally flawed in the concept of a constitutional monarchy?
Nd: Like what?
AE: Well, should these examples not lead us to believe that the idea of constant restrain and self-control simply
takes too big a toll on its followers? Is it not true to argue, that people occasionally do need to let their hair down,
even if it’s in the eye of the public? And isn’t it, hence, quite mistaken to expect anyone to offer a perfect public
front at all times?
Nd: Surely, you are right when you suggest that we should not be overly rigorous about the idea of perfection. (-
which, by the way, would also explain why we aren’t too concerned about the various scandals that have happened just as much in
the British societies as in most other cultures too.) That however does not mean that we should give up the idea of
perfection as such. The key here is much rather to find the right level of personal balance and sovereignty which
would allow you to pursue the idea of perfection in an adequate way.
AE: You keep being very abstract in your explanations!
Nd: Which is precisely why we do welcome the fact that a constitutional monarchy provides a live interpretation of
what they think good manners etc. are all about.
AE: And do you think that there interpretations are by and large “adequate”?
Nd: By and large, yes. In any case, we find it quite interesting to watch them. And we believe that just by inspiring
us to come up with this dialog they have proven to be worth the money they receive from their tax payer.
